KDP profit FAQ
How do I calculate my KDP profit?
Profit = royalties − tax withheld − ad spend − other monthly costs. The royalty per copy is the KDP rate (50 % or 60 %) × list price − printing cost. One-time costs such as a cover are then earned back from the monthly profit.
What is break-even ACoS for KDP ads?
Break-even ACoS = royalty ÷ list price. A $9.99 book that earns $2.95 per copy breaks even at about 30 % ACoS: below that, each ad sale makes money; above it, ads cost more than they earn.
What is TACoS?
Total ACoS: your ad spend divided by the revenue of all sales, with and without ads. It shows how much of your whole business the ads cost, and falls as organic sales grow.
Which costs should I include?
Monthly: Amazon Ads, software and subscriptions (book generators, keyword tools). One-time: cover design, editing, formatting, illustrations and author copies.
Does it include income tax?
Only the tax Amazon withholds from royalties (for example US withholding for non-US authors without a tax treaty). Income tax in your own country is not included — ask a tax advisor.
Are low-content and puzzle books profitable on KDP?
They can be: printing a 100-page black-ink book costs $2.30–$2.84 on Amazon.com, so at $9.99 each copy earns about $3 to $3.70. Profit comes from a series of books that share tools and ad learnings — try your own numbers above.
