In short

A missing vowels puzzle prints themed words with A, E, I, O and U taken out, and the solver writes them back. A good book matches word length, print style and helpers to its readers and never prints a word that fits two answers. This guide explains each decision and shows, screen by screen, how to make a complete missing vowels book in Wisdom Effect.

What a Missing Vowels Puzzle Is

A missing vowels puzzle lists words with their vowels taken out — M_RC_RY, or MRCRY in the hardest style — and the solver writes the whole word back. The puzzle title and a small theme line ("Solar System") tell the reader what kind of words to expect.

It is quick to explain, fits on a single page and trains spelling and vocabulary, which is why teachers, parents and activity book readers of every age like it. It also works well as a chapter of a mixed activity book.

A standard missing vowels page with 12 solar system words, an empty box for every missing vowel
Standard (Medium): 12 words of 4–8 letters, an empty box for every missing vowel.

Pick the Audience and Word Lengths

Children enjoy 3–6 letter words with the first letter kept and the missing vowels printed under each word. Adults like 4–8 letters in a classic puzzle and up to 12 in an expert one, and seniors prefer familiar words of up to 8 letters in large boxes with one puzzle per page.

Wisdom Effect has three editions with these limits built in. Each edition starts with its own defaults, which you can change in the configurator.

Kids: six short words in big boxes, the first letter kept and a vowel bank under each word.

Senior: ten familiar words in large boxes, the first letter kept.

Gaps, Consonants Only and Difficulty

The gap style prints an empty box for every missing vowel between the consonants (S_T_RN): the reader sees the word length and where each vowel goes. It suits beginners, children and seniors.

The consonants-only style prints just the consonants closed up (STRN) and leaves an answer area next to them: letter boxes that show how many letters the word has, or a plain writing line for experts. Longer words, more words per puzzle and less familiar themes make any style harder.

A missing vowels page in the consonants only style: 15 words printed as consonants with empty letter boxes next to them
Hard preset: 15 words of 5–10 letters, consonants only, one answer box per letter.

One Right Answer per Word

Some printed words fit more than one answer: C_T can be CAT, COT or CUT, and B_K_R can be BAKER or BIKER. A reader who writes a valid word and finds a different one in the answer key feels cheated.

Wisdom Effect checks every word against all words of its 900+ themes plus your own list and leaves out a word whose printed form also fits another word. Words with no vowel to remove (RHYTHM) and words that would keep too few letters to be readable are left out as well.

Vowel Bank, First Letter and Clues

Three helpers make a puzzle friendlier without giving the answer away. The vowel bank prints the missing vowels of each word under it in A–Z order ("Vowels: E O"). Keeping the first letter prints it even when it is a vowel (ORBIT → ORB_T). A short clue under each word helps with your own word lists.

For kids, use short words, the gap style, the first letter and the vowel bank. For seniors, use large boxes, fewer words per page and the gap style; consonants only can come later in the book.

Answer Keys

The answer key at the back prints every word in full with the restored vowels highlighted, so readers check a whole puzzle at a glance. Standard books fit 1, 2, 4 or 6 solutions per page; Kids and Senior books 1, 2 or 4 in bigger print.

Step 1: Create the Book

On /create choose the edition at the top (Standard, Kids or Senior) and click the Missing Vowels card. Missing Vowels books are part of every plan, Starter included. Missing vowels can also be one chapter of a Mixed Book.

Step 2: Difficulty and Words

Difficulty sets word lengths, words per puzzle and the puzzle style in one click: Easy (3–6 letters, 10 words, first letter and vowel bank), Medium (4–8 letters, 12 words, gaps), Hard (5–10 letters, 15 words, consonants only with boxes) and Expert (7–12 letters, 20 words, consonants only with a writing line). Kids books offer Tiny, Small, Big and Giant (ages 5 to 9+), Senior books Relaxed, Classic, Challenging and Master.

Then choose the words. Curated Themes takes one of the 900+ themes, grouped in collections such as Space & Astronomy or Food & Drink, or Mixed Collection with all themes rotating; every puzzle gets its own sub-theme. Kids books show only kid-friendly collections.

Upload CSV / Custom takes your own list: a CSV with a Title,Word,Hint header, one word per row. Rows with the same Title become one puzzle, and Hint is optional — it prints a clue under the word (put text with commas in quotes). Word search lists work too (Title,Word1,Word2,… per row, or # Title followed by words). Paste the list, drop a file of up to 512 kB or load the sample.

Your words count as known words: a word whose gaps also fit another word of your list or of the themes is skipped unless you allow ambiguous words.

Step 3: Lengths, Puzzle Style and Vowel Rules

Words & Lengths sets the shortest and longest word and the number of words per puzzle; the badge shows how many words of the theme fit, and the panel says how many words fit on the chosen page size. Puzzle Style switches between Gaps and Consonants only; with consonants only you also pick the answer area (letter boxes or a writing line, Standard edition only).

Vowel Rules below decide which letters disappear and what helps the solver.

Step 4: Book Check and Book Settings

Book Check counts the usable words and groups and says why the others are not used: outside the letter range, phrases, abbreviations, no vowel to remove. It warns when puzzles get fewer words than you asked for, when words repeat (in a new order) because the book has more puzzles than word groups, and when a word was skipped because its printed form also fits another word. The book code makes the same settings produce the same puzzles again; type your own or roll a new one.

Then pick the trim size, the number of puzzles (1 missing vowels puzzle of up to 25 words = 1 credit), puzzles and solutions per page and the book language. The page preview shows the first puzzle and solution page, and the KDP summary counts the pages and checks the 24–590 page range of a KDP paperback.

Step 5: Design and Export

Launch Missing Vowels Editor opens the book. The Missing Vowels Design panel sets the line weight of the letter boxes, switches between Gaps and Consonants, the answer area (boxes or a line, with consonants only), the vowel bank and the clues of your own list. The highlight color of the restored vowels in the answer key is in Color Palette (Vowel Highlight).

The other panels change fonts, colors and the cover, add images and decorations and edit the title, copyright, contents and end pages. The page tabs (Cover, Intro, Copyright, TOC, Puzzles, Solutions, End) switch between the parts of the book. When the book is ready, export the interior PDF and the cover PDF for KDP, or PNG and SVG files.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many missing vowels puzzles should a book have?

Most books contain 50–100 puzzles, one per page, plus the answer key at the back with the restored vowels highlighted. KDP needs at least 24 pages for a paperback.

Is Y a vowel in these puzzles?

Usually not — SKY keeps its Y. Counting Y as a vowel makes words like RHYTHM usable and the puzzles harder, so choose it for adult books.

Can I use my own spelling words?

Yes. Upload a CSV with a Title,Word,Hint header; rows with the same title become one puzzle and the hints print as clues under the words.

How many credits does a missing vowels book cost?

One credit per puzzle of up to 25 words, so a 30-puzzle book costs 30 credits. Missing Vowels is part of every plan, Starter included.
